Tyler Rinko, Roanoke College, comes to Izmir to oversee the Izmir Lacrosse program

When former Roanoke-laxer Tyler Rinko was considering accepting a teaching position in Izmir, Turkey, he knew that he would have to give up coaching lacrosse if he decided to accept… or would he? After some quick internet trolling, Tyler found that lacrosse was alive and well in Turkey. Conveniently, Turkey Lacrosse was seeking an experienced laxer to head up their fledgling Izmir program. The match was made.

Tyler will be moving to Izmir this September to teach economics at the MEF International School in Izmir. He will also be heading up Izmir’s lacrosse program under Turkey Lacrosse. Until now, the Izmir program has been the responsibility of the young lacrosse players (aged 14 – 18) living in Izmir. Thanks to Tyler, Turkey Lacrosse will now have a dedicated coach in the area, similar to the programs that already exist in Ankara and Istanbul. Tyler is confident that he is ready to take on that role.

“I am excited to teach kids why lacrosse is such an important sport,” says Tyler. “I plan on utilizing my knowledge of marketing and my passion for the sport to make lacrosse a top sport among youth in Turkey.” Patrick Dougherty, Founder and Executive Director of Turkey Lacrosse, is equally excited about Tyler’s expected coaching role with Turkey Lacrosse. “We are very fortunate that someone with Tyler’s lacrosse background will be teaching in Izmir precisely at a time when we are hoping to expand. We look forward to working together in the coming months and years.”

Turkey Lacrosse will host the Turkish National Team tryouts in Istanbul two weeks from now, from June 29 to July 1, followed by a week-long trip to Israel for a series of exhibition matches between Turkey Lacrosse, Israeli Lacrosse, the Jewish-American All-Star Team, the Jewish-Canadian All-Star Team, and the European-Jewish All-Star Team.
